ENDORSES ALEX PADILLA FOR SENATE

ANGELES – Los Angeles County Supervisor
Yvonne B. Burke today announced her support for Los Angeles
City Council President Alex Padilla in his campaign for
the 20th State Senate District.
“Alex Padilla is a proven leader and a committed
advocate for the people and neighborhoods that need the
most help,” Burke said. “He’s brought
more after-school programs to the Northeast Valley and
he’s helped bring parks and libraries to previously
blighted areas. Alex exemplifies the kind of leadership
we need in the State Senate, and I’m proud to support
him.”
“Supervisor Burke is a true champion for children
and families. Her service to the people of Los Angeles
has resulted in improved care for foster children, increased
access to quality child care, and enhanced educational
opportunities. She’s been nationally recognized as
a dynamic leader, and I’m honored to have her support,” Padilla
said.
Council President Padilla is running for the State Senate
seat being vacated by State Senator Richard Alarcon. The
primary election will be held in June 2006.
Supervisor Burke has a distinguished record of public
service that spans nearly four decades and all levels of
government. After serving in the California State Assembly,
Supervisor Burke became the first African American woman
elected to Congress from California and later became the
first to serve as the Chair of the Los Angeles County Board
of Supervisors.
Recognized
by Time Magazine as one of America’s
200 future leaders Supervisor Burke has been a leader in
national politics. She served as Vice Chair of the 1972
Democratic National Convention, Chair of the L.A. Federal
Reserve Bank, and Vice Chairman of the 1984 U.S. Olympics
Organizing Committee.
Council President Padilla has received the endorsement
of U.S. Senators Feinstein and Boxer and Congresswomen
Harman, Millender-McDonald, Napolitano, Roybal-Allard,
Waters and Watson. Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria
Molina has also announced her support of the Padilla campaign.
